ISO 45001

What is DIN ISO 45001?

ISO 45001 is an international standard for occupational health and safety management systems. It provides a framework for organisations to create a safe and healthy working environment and prevent occupational accidents and work-related illnesses. The standard is industry-independent and applicable to organisations of all sizes. It replaces the older OHSAS 18001 standard. ISO 45001 is compatible with other ISO management system standards, such as ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO 14001 (environmental management), and is based on the so-called "high-level structure", which enables easy integration into existing management systems.

ISO 45001 deals with:

  • Occupational health and safety management system

  • Creation of a safe and healthy working environment

  • Prevention of occupational accidents

  • Prevention of work-related illnesses

  • Continuous improvement of occupational safety

  • Fulfilment of legal and regulatory requirements

Who is it for?

ISO 45001 is intended for organisations of all sizes and from all industries, including the public and private sectors. It is relevant for manufacturers as well as service providers and non-profit organisations. It is also aimed at employers and employees as well as contractors and suppliers involved in an organisation's operations.

How is the ISO 45001 standard structured?

The structure of ISO 45001 follows the so-called "high-level structure", which is also used in other ISO management system standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. This facilitates integration with other management systems. The main sections of the standard are generally organised as follows:

Overview of the standard structure:

  • 1. scope: defines to whom and in what context the standard is applicable.

  • 2. Normative references: Lists other standards that are relevant to the application of ISO 45001.

  • 3. terms and definitions: Clarifies the meaning of specific terms in the standard.

  • 4. context of the organisation: analyses the organisational framework, including the expectations of external and internal parties.

  • 5. Leadership: Emphasises the role of management in implementing and maintaining the management system.

  • 6. Planning: Describes how risks and opportunities are to be identified and assessed.

  • 7. support: Refers to resources, competences, awareness and communication required for the management system.

  • 8. Operation: Specifies how the processes and procedures for minimising risk and improving performance are to be implemented.

  • 9. performance evaluation: Describes the methods for monitoring, measuring and evaluating the performance of the management system.

  • 10. improvement: Emphasises the need for continuous improvement and specifies how deviations are to be corrected and preventive measures taken.

Each of these sections contains specific requirements and guidelines to assist organisations in implementing and maintaining an effective occupational health and safety management system.

What is A&GSM certification to ISO 45001?

ISO 45001 certification is a process in which an accredited certification body verifies and confirms the conformity of an organisation's occupational health and safety management system with the requirements of the ISO 45001 standard. This process usually involves an on-site assessment, during which the certification body evaluates the organisation's documentation, processes and procedures to ensure that they comply with the standards.

Upon successful completion of the assessment, the organisation receives a certificate that is valid for a specified period, usually three years. During this time, regular surveillance audits are required to confirm continued compliance.

Here is a brief explanation:

  • Verification by accredited certification body

  • Conformity with ISO 45001 standard

  • On-site assessment of documentation, processes and procedures

  • Certificate after successful completion, valid for three years

  • Regular surveillance audits

  • Proof of compliance with occupational health and safety laws

  • Improvement of occupational health and safety

  • Increase in operational efficiency

  • Positive impact on corporate image and market position

How does ISO 45001 certification work?

ISO 45001 certification usually involves the following steps:

  • 1. preparation: the organisation prepares internally, implements the occupational health and safety management system and ensures that it meets the requirements of ISO 45001.

  • 2. selection of the certification body: the organisation selects an accredited certification body and submits an application for certification.

  • 3. pre-audit (optional): Some organisations choose to have a pre-audit to identify any weaknesses in the system before the actual certification audit.

  • 4. document review: The certification body reviews the documentation to ensure that it meets the requirements of the standard.

  • 5. certification audit: auditors from the certification body carry out an on-site audit to assess implementation and effectiveness.

  • 6. report and assessment: After the audit, the certification body prepares a report and assesses whether the organisation meets the requirements of the standard.

  • 7. issue of certificate: If the assessment is successful, a certificate is issued, which is usually valid for three years.

  • 8. surveillance audits: During the period of validity of the certificate, regular surveillance audits are conducted to verify continued conformity.

  • 9. recertification: Before the three-year period of validity expires, recertification must take place in order to renew the certificate.

This process may vary depending on the organisation and certification body, but provides a general overview of the ISO 45001 certification process.
